Kate Upton: The WOW Factor

Vogue features director Sarah Harris writes about Upton in the January issue: "Standing at 5ft 10in, with her outsize bosoms and long slender legs, Kate Upton has a body that belongs to the supermodel era of modeling. Growing up, she idolised Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, and Heido Klum.  In the flesh, this all-American beauty resembles a young Anna Nicole Smith or Marilyn Monroe."

The unusual leap that Kate Upton has made from the cover of Sports Illustrated to Vogue UK really does emphasise her previously doubted versatility. Few models with such proportions and possess the curves necessary to become swimsuit models are ever able to make the huge leap into high fashion and Kate Upton has defied that taboo. In fact throughout the whole spread, it is difficult to see how she could only be viewed as a swimsuit model when she looks so at home within the pages of such a prestigious magazine!

Personally, the shoot appears glamourous and sophisticated whilst still paying homage to Kate's bountiful curves that she works with so very well; allowing her to show off what thrust her into the limelight to begin with! Throughout the spread, the styling is extremely clever as although Kate is petite in real life, many of her proportions do differ to that of traditional models (a term I prefer to use lightly). As a result, the stylist hasn't attempted to dress her in outfits that others may wear, thank god!

Now, it is absolutely refreshing to see someone as unique as Kate Upton grace the cover of my issue of January Vogue, especially as she is a role model for young girls who have been bestowed with gifts similar to Kate's and believe them to be unable to model. This most interesting aspect of the feature does provide a new outlook on what the definition a model is, whether they have to be a size zero to be successful; only time will tell. I am almost waiting for a scathing comment from Karl Lagerfield anyday soon, scolding Alexander Shulman for a bad decision. I hope not.

As an individual, I am actually finding it tricky to persuade myself to spend money on fashion magazines such as Vogue of even Elle simply because it has been an actress on the cover, however with Kate Upton covering the issue, I couldn't refuse!

Doutzen Kroes for British Vogue

Doutzen Kroes, known for her title as a Victoria's Secret Angel, has been featured in the editorial spread for the January issue of British Vogue. The blonde bombshell is typically seen scantily clad walking down the runway, but her feature set around the beach makes her look like a stunning mermaid. Her beautifully tanned skin and natural looking make up really does epitomise 'beach babe' and the almost excessive use of tweed and straw only mirror this. The neutral and earthy tones echoed throughout the spread add the much needed natural and hollistic look that is not always associated with the Winter season! However, I don't think anyones mind would be on the season when looking through the spread. Doutzen looks simply incredible (almost better than in sultry lingerie!).

The contrasting looks to her typical barbie-esque makeup at VS does show a versatility that not all Angels possess, which in my opinion makes Doutzen more valuable as she would have a successful modelling career even if she was not an Angel. I sincerely hope that the brand does not over manufacture her and allows her to have a career in high fashion as well as catalog lingerie.

I adore it when Victoria's Secret models get featured in such high fashion magazines as it just reminds us that they are more than sex bombs but are models too.

Rita Ora for British Vogue

Rita Ora, pops newest singer songwriter, has been featured in the December issue of British Vogue. Although she has been accused of taking style cues from Rihanna, she is really starting to come into her own. The beautiful shots of her in Vogue really does emphasise her unique beauty. However, although I am not a particular fan of celebrities being in such magazines, the shoot was not in the typical cheesy style of the usual celebrity shoots, but one that could be more high fashion. What do you think about the images?

The Fab Five: One Direction for Vogue UK

One Direction, the band that has brought five British boys to global fame following their second place win in the X Factor. The teen pop sensation is now the first British Band to reach stardom in the USA and the UK. However, they have been featured in the latest Vogue UK. Although they do look like the teenage heart throbs that they are, I'm not sure that they are worthy of being featured in Vogue of all places! They really should stay in the pages of TeenPop and Sugarscape. The oh so cheesy spread may have been included to encourage the younger generation to buy Vogue but I really can't understand why the marketing department would want to change their audience dynamic? I must say that I was relieved that they didn't cover the magazine, I would have lost all hope if they had.

Enough with the negativity, they do all look incredibly handsome in the shoot, looking far more mature than they did in the X Factor. The black and white filter on the images does add a classy side to the otherwise fun loving band members. I do like how the magazine hasn't made all the shots too serious with the jumping one still being fun!
What do you think? Do they belong in the pages of Vogue or should they remain in Top of the Pops?
